Natural disasters are events that can destroy life and the environment quickly. Most recently, various natural disasters rocked the world, ranging from earthquakes, floods, to forest fires. One of the most striking disasters was the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked Turkey and Syria in early 2023. This event caused thousands of lives lost and massive damage to infrastructure. In addition, flash floods in Pakistan that same year also rocked much of the region, submerging more than one-third of the country. These floods are caused by extreme monsoon rains, which are the impact of climate change. The number of refugees increased significantly, and various international organizations began to mobilize to provide assistance. In the United States, forest fires in California are no less serious. With extreme temperatures hitting, many areas burned to the ground. These fires threaten biodiversity and force thousands of people to flee. Firefighting efforts also experienced difficulties due to hot weather conditions and strong winds. Various modern tools and technology have been used to extinguish the fire, but the burned area continues to expand. The earthquake in Haiti, which occurred around February 2023, also became a global spotlight. With a strength of 7.0 on the Richter scale, the impact is reminiscent of the major disaster that struck in 2010. Infrastructure that has not yet fully recovered means that casualties have increased drastically, and many people need urgent assistance. Not only that, tropical storms which are becoming stronger due to climate change are also causing damage in other areas, such as Hurricane Idalia which hit Florida. Strong winds, heavy rain and flooding pose serious threats to local residents. After a disaster, recovery efforts often take a long time, causing uncertainty for affected residents. The issue of climate change is the main focus in discussions about natural disasters. Rising global temperatures contribute to an increase in the frequency and intensity of disasters, resulting in more people affected and a heavier economic burden. Many countries are now starting to strengthen mitigation and adaptation policies as preventive measures. From these latest disasters, it is clear that global cooperation is vital. Countries must support each other in terms of humanitarian assistance, monitoring technology, and effective disaster management. Public education regarding disaster risks also needs to be prioritized, so that they are better prepared to face future threats. By focusing on resilience and sustainability, it is hoped that we can reduce the negative impact of natural disasters which are increasingly occurring.
